Limousine Driving Safety Considerations

Limousines are an extravagant way to travel, especially for special nights out. As summer has arrived, there is likely going to be an increase in business for limousine companies nationwide. With that said, there are certain safety considerations to share with clients in order to keep their drivers protected on the road. Just as important, however, is ensuring they are adequately protected with a comprehensive Limousine Insurance Package.

According to the data from the Fatality Analysis Reporting System (FARS), about 45% of an estimated 5.8 million crashes that occurred in the United States were intersection-related incidents. What’s more, the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) has reported that most intersection crashes may be attributed to drivers’ inattention while crossing over at intersections, turning with obstructed views, misjudgment of oncoming drivers’ speeds while turning left and a false assumption of others’ actions while turning right.

As there are many points of conflict when navigating a large vehicle, it’s important to follow these safety techniques.

Drive defensively.

As drivers approach busy intersections, they should be aware of what is going on around them. Look for traffic, pedestrians, or anyone who might run the red light. It’s recommended that drivers keep their foot hovered over the brake to allow for sudden slowing if needed. Furthermore, pay attention to the crosswalk signals. If it says “don’t walk,” chances are the light is about to change.  Remember, large vehicles take longer to accelerate, turn, and come to a complete stop, so plan ahead.

Allow plenty of room to maneuver.

Drivers should allow room for wide maneuvers, especially tight right turns. Next, be mindful of blind spots that pedestrians could be in when turning as this poses another significant risk. Lastly, be cautious and don’t rush. Double check for oncoming traffic before proceeding through an intersection to allow plenty of time to complete the turn or crossing safely. As the transportation industry is liable for the safety of their passengers, these tips are critical.
